Carob, one of the flavours of my childhood. My grandmother had a carob tree in her garden (she never did anything with the fruit), but we could find carob in shops and health shops known as Plafar ('pla' from 'plants' and 'far' from 'pharmacy'). Mum had a recipe for carob cake, and we all loved it. As a drink, it was quite good, too. Of course, we didn't have cocoa powder or chocolate very often, so I suppose that's the reason for carob's bad reputation. In reality, it contains more vitamins (and tastes better) than cocoa powder. I have a recipe for date truffles rolled in carob powder if you'd like to see it. They are delicious. A real power snack. Great post, Sam.

The carob cake and truffles sound sublime. I've just posted a recipe today for a beef stew using carob molasses which I actually think I prefer to the pomegranate variety (although I can appreciate that they have different flavour profiles).Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. Sometimes you do wonder if anyone out there is actually reading/listening to you!
